This week we had a surprisingly fun shoot at Cheeky Vintage on Richmond.
Cheeky Vintage has everything from the classic little black dress, to accessories, to handbags, and even to opera jackets from the 50s to the 80s. I modeled some fun, eye-catching dresses from the 60's and 70's for the camera, and was surprised at how comfortable and well made they all were, not to mention cute! Their subtle funkiness comes across as personal style and fashion. They have so much character and individual style that it would be hard to find something to match it in any store today. If you are looking to add a little attitude to your wardrobe, go vintage!
The tips I picked up this week are important if you want to achieve that modern, personalized style that vintage can bring you.
Lesson 1: Getting started! Afraid to jump right in to vintage styles? Accessories are a great way to get started! Try out a funky handbag or a chunky necklace with your daily outfits.
Lesson 2: You can't wear vintage head to toe. Throw on a pair of gladiator sandals or sexy high heals with a vintage dress, and you'll turn every head.
Lesson 3: Don't be afraid to alter! You can slightly alter a vintage dress to make it more modern without ruining the integrity and authenticity of the piece.
Lesson 4: Current clothing just can't compare! Modern clothes are like disposable clothes; vintage clothing has passed the test of time and will continue to be timeless.
Lesson 5: Maintaining the modern! Throw a vintage mini dress on over a pair of jeans, or try a vintage belt over an edgy dress. There are so many options with vintage clothing, that it can always be good choice for your wardrobe.
Lesson 6: Stay away from costumes! The whole point of mixing vintage with modern elements of fashion is to make the vintage item not look like a costume. The modern components pull the vintage item into the present and make it come alive.
Designers are constantly tweaking old styles, recreating them, and calling them new and edgy. Go vintage and you can have the original! There is no question that vintage items can complete a look and give life and personality to any outfit.
