Habitat for Humanity Pasadena is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. They are committed to the ideal that all people deserve a simple, decent, healthy place to live on terms they can afford to pay.

The earnings from the ReStore serve as a major contributor in being able to provide affordable housing. The ReStore resale shop offers a second life to donated items and sells them at a reduced cost. "Restores came about as a way to reuse the items from deconstruction projects," said Leah McWhinnie, executive director at Habitat for Humanity Pasadena. "It also serves as a conduit to keep items out of landfills and reduces waste while providing a cost effective way to make home repairs to people who may be on a limited budget," said McWhinnie. Resale stores were a natural "fit" and a way to enhance the mission of Habitat for Humanity.

"It's not a hand out but a hand up," said Stephen Church, ReStore Manager.

Supporters of Habitat for Humanity can donate useable items for resale and receive a tax deduction for their donation. Donations of appliances, gently used furniture, electronics (TV's, DVD players, VCR's in working conditions) washers and dryers, stoves (gas and electric) household items (dishes, plates, pots, pans, silverware, glassware) building related materials (kitchen and bathroom cabinets) wood products, plumbing/electrical fixtures, books and recyclable metals are needed. People can drop off their donations or schedule a pick up.

"Many people think we give away our homes, but our goal is to make housing affordable, by using volunteers to build, accepting donations for materials, and providing a no-interest mortgage so that low-income families can realize their dream of owning a home," said McWhinnie. "We need to let the public know of the great treasures at a low cost the ReStore has to offer its local community."
