RICHMOND, TX -
A meeting on the internet turned into a manhunt after police issued an Amber Alert for 16-year-old Alyssa Rehfield. They believe the teen may be with 36-year-old David Karan.
Police also said there is evidence this is not a runaway case. Rehfield left her cell phone in her home, which is unusual for a teen.
Rehfield's mother discovered her daughter was missing at around 1 a.m. Tuesday. She last saw her daughter asleep in her room around 11:30 p.m.
Detectives with the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office examined phone calls Rehfield had made and received at her home. They connected several calls to the place Karan has been living.
"We can't find any criminal history for this individual," FBCSO Capt. James Burger said.
Sheriff's deputies aren't sure if the two had agreed to meet or if she went with Karan voluntarily. That is why an Amber Alert is justified, officials said.
"We have a missing 16-year-old female who we believe is in the company of a 36-year-old without the permission or consent of the mom or dad. It's our job to investigate it to the point where we can say, 'no, she is safe,'" Burger said.
Investigators traced Karan to the address listed on his Texas driver license. He has been living at the Studio Six Extended Stay motel just off the Beltway in west Houston. However, when police searched his room, Karan was already gone.
Police believe the two are in a two-door hatch-back car with Oregon license plate 884 AGZ. The car was last seen early Tuesday morning west of San Antonio.
"Anytime a juvenile girl is in the custody of an adult male, that brings alarms to us and we act on it," Burger said.
Police believe Karan is headed to California, Oregon or Missouri. He is known to have lived in all three states; Missouri most recently.
Even if Rehfield went willingly, police say Karan could still be in trouble for soliciting a minor online.
