HOUSTON—
Here a sign, there a sign... Everywhere there's a sign...But have you ever asked: "What if billboards didn't exist?"
Well you'd see the sky, trees, buildings or whatever is behind those massive signs.
It's all part of Karyn Olivier's latest work called: "Inbound: Houston."
"To me, it's a like a gift to Houston," said Olivier.
At her launch party Monday, the artist from Brooklyn told 39 News how she and photographer, David Brown, set out to get the exact perspective of Houston commuters.
"He sat behind me and we took off the headrest," said Olivier. "I had to bend down, while still trying to see where I was driving. He put the camera where my head would be and took pictures from an angle."
"I think they're beautiful," said David Brown. "We want to show how we're so inundated with advertising."
Altogether, the project features 13 billboards, mostly along US 59, Loop 610, Interstate 10, and North Beltway 8.
They will stay up through November 22, and as you've guessed, it's not cheap.
"The billboards themselves cost $35,000 for 13 and $5,000 to have them printed," said Olivier. "I told them all I have is $40,000."
