Residents at at the Alexan on Main apartment complex in Southwest Houston woke up this morning to find their car window busted out and some of their personal items gone.

It happened around 3:30 Friday morning. Many of those residents were on their way to work, when they got the shocking surprise. It wasn't just one car, but Houston Police say more than 40 cars were broken into in just one night! "You're a hard working man and someone steals your stuff, it just makes you mad," said resident Lucious Fleming.

Today was supposed to be Fleming's day off, but it didn't turn out to be the kind of day he imagined it would be. "I parked on the second floor and as soon as I came out of the elevator I noticed my car busted into, then as I got around I realized everybody got busted into," Fleming said.

Residents said it appears the thieves went from floor to floor hitting about 40 cars in the parking garage at the Alexan on Main. "They do work quickly, we don't know how long they were there, but they did work quickly," said HPD Captain Mark Fougerousse.

Fleming said his car was ransacked, though he didn't have much inside worth taking. Ade Olaloko wasn't so lucky, he had two GPS units swiped. "My car is spotless, if you look inside, but they had gone through everything in my console - ran through all of it to make sure they could grab whatever they could grab out of it," Olaloko said.

Now, Olaloko is out a couple hundred dollars for the cost of those units and another $130 for the new window he had replaced today. "The biggest shock, we're supposed to have a security guard patrolling all night," he said. Though other residents said the guard hasn't been there for over a year.

While you have to have a key to get in and out of the complex, it's not hard to just follow closely behind someone to gain access. Friday, some residents started a petition to get the night guard back.

No one from the complex could talk on camera, but a spokeswoman from the corporate office in Dallas said they would look into the situation to see what steps could and should be taken. "They better get a security guard , there's no hoping. I have a problem with that because there should be a security guard here. I heard there's been more break-ins before this one, so it's a problem," Fleming said.

There were security cameras in the garage. Investigators are looking to see any of the thieves' pictures were captured on them. HPD reminds, don't leave anything personal out in the open and always lock your doors.
