HOUSTON -
Houston police have charged a man with the beating death of his six-year-old son following an all night disciplinary session.
The victim, Tekerrious "TK" Jackson, 6, suffered severe bodily injury and was transported to Texas Children's Hospital where he was pronounced dead Sunday. The boy's father, 34-year-old Alex McGowen Duncan, has been charged with murder.
Investigators said Duncan repeatedly punched the boy in the chest because he would not go to sleep.
"I know he is in a better place right now," said Lucy Adams, TK's mother.
Adams said she allowed her son to spend the summer with his father after Duncan asked to be apart of his life. Duncan has been an absent parent for the past three years.
"My baby went through all thatÂ… if I could have taken his place I would have," said Adams.
Duncan's girlfriend, Tammyra Sampson, has also been charged with injury to a child by omission. Investigators said Sampson watched the alleged beating and only intervened to show Duncan how to properly whip the child with a belt. Her 11-year-old daughter also witnessed the beating.
Houston homicide investigators questioned the girl who re-enacted some of what she saw happen to TK over the course of 8 hours.
"From talking to the 11-year-old girl living in the house, she said the abuse started from day one," said Estella Olguin with Child Protective Services.
In 2003, CPS investigated Sampson for reported drug use and alleged abuse against another one of her children.
"I mean she got a child of her own. How could you watch something like that, condone something like that," said Adams.
Questions she may never get answered. Meanwhile, she lives with the guilt that she left her son in the hands of a monster.
On Sunday, she held TK one last time in an emergency room.
"I said goodbye, I told him I loved him and that soon we'll be together," she said.
Ducan and Sampson are being held on $50,000 bail. CPS has also placed Sampson's two children including the 11-year-old in their custody.
