Precinct 7 committed to a major crack down on crime fueled by public out cry.

Deputies say criminal activity and violent crimes are on the rise, and they're trying to put a stop to it.

From 4pm Friday to 2am Saturday morning, deputies are increasing patrol in and around the North MacGregor area, where residents say they've seen a spike in crime.

The problem, residents say, is that a bulk of the crimes are committed by patrons leaving the many night clubs in the area.

Precinct 7 Sgt. Doretta Griffin said there have been a rash of drug and criminal activities, including robberies, break-ins, shootings, and car thefts.

"I'm not really sure what's fueling it," said Sgt. Griffin. "It could be the sign of the times, as far as the economy. We are going to monitor it and we're going to try and end the activities."

Residents and business owners say they've noticed the increased patrol, and are happy about it.

"If the police are out doing their job, then I can do my job with more confidence," said Garry Jedkins, a barbershop owner in the area.
