Nearly a thousand people attended the funeral for Chambers County Deputy Shane Detwiler. Law enforcement from southeast Texas filled Maranantha Church in Mont Belvieu.
"While Shane was my employee for only two months..we were friends a lot longer," Chambers County Sheriff Joe LaRive said.
They remember Detwiler for his service in Iraq. They remember six years as a Texas Game Warden and his love of scuba diving. Detwiler's biggest love was his wife and three young children.
Trish Detwiler let the crowd know the work her husband did at home.
"His children were his life. He had a system, rocking each to bed at night, he.never put a crying baby to bed," she said.
On Monday Detwiler and others responded to a shooting between a woman in a mobile home and workers dealing with a water meter. Investigators say homeowner Gilbert Ortez shot Detwiler then shot and killed himself.
After the service many of Detwiler's friends wore buttons with the fallen deputy's photo.
"It is hard, he served the county well," said one friend.
Along the procession to Memory Gardens in Baytown, people lined the streets holding American flags.
"We feel their pain," Colleen Fontenot said.
Deputy Shane Thomas Detwiler would have been 32-years-old on July 31st.
