Two bomb squads and several law enforcement agencies were still in Chambers County Tuesday night. They are at the scene of a deadly standoff that took place on Monday.

A Deputy Sheriff was killed in that standoff, and now autopsy results reveal the gunman killed himself, and did not die during the fire-fight with law enforcement.

"Our hearts and our prayers go out to the family of Shane," said Chambers County Sheriff Joe LaRive.

Chambers County Deputy Shane Detwiler was 31, married with two boys and a girl. Four year old Audie, 22 month old Aiden, and 8 month old Abigail.

"His death was the result of two gun shot wounds to the head from a high powered riffle. He was also was struck once in his ballistic vest," said LaRive.

Thirty-seven-year-old Gilbert Ortez is believed to have shot Detwiler before shooting and killing himself. Ortez was once a volunteer police officer with the tiny East Texas Town of Kenefick. A high powered rifle was found next to Ortez in his trailer home were the incident took place. Detectives also hand guns and more than 100 explosives devices that were still being cleared on Tuesday night.

"One of the bomb squad guys said that a device they removed could have taken out the whole trailer," said LaRive.

The Sheriff says Detwiler did everything he could to protect himself, but that Ortez's common law wife Pamela Leggett-Ortez shouted a warning that deputies were coming.

"Shane was a very careful person. He had on two (bullet proof) vests that day. He wore his vest under his uniform, and anytime he'd go into a situation he thought might get bad he had a raid ballistic vest on too. One of the bullets struck him in the chest area and did not penetrate," said LaRive.

Leggett-Ortez is 29 years old. She's charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and resisting arrest. She's being held on an $800,000 bond.

"She has been very uncooperative, and the first thing out of her mouth was she wanted to speak to her lawyer. I can't say on camera the other things that she said," LaRive said.

There are two memorial funds that have been set up for Detwiler's children. Click on the go button for that information, and the viewing and funeral information.
