It's what could soon be common around Houston: a charging station for electric cars. Ten city owned Prius Hybrid vehicles will use the station, they get about 100 miles per gallon. There is no comment from the city on the stations. Official word will come in a news conference scheduled for Tuesday.

Although a recent story on Discovery.com gets us connected with what this likely means.

The story says there will be ten charging stations in Houston and that the city will make seven of them free to the public for the first year.

The story also claims Houston is in competition to be one of the first of so called "launch spots" for the Nissan Leaf, the first production scale electric vehicle. To do this there needs to be a commitment from within the city to buy 300 Leafs within a year. The hope is the charging stations can help.

All of this is part of Project Get Ready, a non-profit initiative helping major cities build infrastructure for electric vehicles.
