There have been many promotions at Gallery Furniture that have had people talking, but this month Jim "Mattress Mac" McIngvale is betting customers like football as much as his furniture.
"It makes us relevant people are talking about this promotion," McIngvale said.
The sign outside says "pick your team." Inside it's easy to figure out the choices. Employees are decked-out in Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints jerseys. The winner of the NFC Championship goes to the Super Bowl, but after the game there will be winners here.
If you buy at least $5,000 in merchandise and pick the correct winner of the game, you get half your money back. Chandler Knies now loves Minnesota as much as a new recliner.
"I figured I can use some help cheering for my Vikings," Knies said.
McIngvale says lawyers had to go over the contest rules and made sure things did not go "out of bounds."
That's why you won't ever hear him say "Saints" or "Vikings" in any promotion. Trademark restrictions mean you pick between "that team from..."
Gallery Furniture had a similar promotion earlier this month for the championship game between Texas and Alabama. McIingvale says business in the store was up nearly 25 percent because of the contest. Surprisingly, a majority of the picks were for Alabama. Nearly $500,000 was refunded to customers.
"We took a small loss but look at it the other way, we now have customers for life," McIngvale said
This kind of promotion is nothing new. In 2006 an Illinois furniture store gave away $300,000 after the Bears shutout the Packers. That store reportedly took out insurance. There was no insurance for the contest here--just money--if your team is "money" on Sunday.
