We've heard of the countless agencies sending medical supplies and the hundreds of doctors who are volunteering their time in Haiti to provide medical care, but a group of men in Humble are helping in a very different way.
Instead of relaxing under the sun Saturday, the men from the Atascocita United Methodist Church were hard at work.
"We start out with just an empty shipping container which we buy," said Paul Schauman.
When it's all said and done, they will turn a 40 foot, steel cargo shipping container into a fully functional, mobile medical clinic.
"It has an office, three treatment areas - we plumb it for a couple of sinks with hot and cold water," Shauman said.
No sweat for these guys, who built one just like it, to send to South Texas, a couple of year ago.
"You can send food places and that helps because they need that right away, but this is something you can send and they can use for years and years," he said.
To make sure it does go to those who need it most, the group is working with another church in Pearland, who already has volunteers on the ground in Haiti. "They install the treatment beds and anything else that needs to be put in make sure it's full of medical supplies or food - then they put it on a ship and it goes to Haiti," Shauman said.
But this good deed doesn't come without snags. "We had zero when we started," said Henry Pruitt.
They were so moved to do something to help - they relied on faith to supply their needs. "We've raised about half of the $15,000 needed," Shauman said.
In still, these men remain positive they'll reach their goal and this clinic will be ready to go by the end of the month. "It makes you feel good when, you know, you're helping other people," said Shauman.
The men still need donations of materials, money and even volunteers. If you're interested in helping you can mail your checks to the Atascocita United Methodist Church at 19325 Pinehurst Trails Dr. Humble, TX 77346
