FRIENDSWOOD -
In Friendswood, some of the signs say welcome, but lately police have seen something they don't want to see.
"Two years ago it wasn't even on our radar," Lt. Josh Rogers said.
Small bottles that once may have been passed over during a traffic stop are now getting attention. They may look like something to help your eyes and ears, some are even in old Visine bottles, but take a closer look and you can tell things are different. The brown liquid inside is liquefied black tar heroin. It's called "Liquid O" on the street. The O stands for opium.
"It's the same black tar heroin but it's just ingested differently," Bishop said.
Two years ago, Friendswood police had only 3 arrests connected to this, but last year there was a dramatic increase. There were 30 arrests in this area, about half of them were dealers and suppliers. One drop in your nose costs about $5 to $10, and we're told you can get about 90 doses from one gram of black tar heroin. It's a cheaper, quicker high that has dealers from the region are finding customers in Friendswood.
"The concern is how many people are addicted in the area," Bishop said.
And that concern means Friendswood police want to get the word out. Because coming into the jail here are people in their late teens and early 20's addicted to a form of heroin they never used a needle for and cost them just a few bucks.
"It's a very ugly situation, we've had people in the jail dealing with diarrhea and vomiting," Bishop said.
That's why Friendswood police will hold an informational meeting on the subject this week.
That meeting will take place Thursday, February 25 at 6 p.m. at 302 Laurel Dr. Call 281-482-1267 ext.237 for more information.
