This holiday season several major airlines are upping their surcharge by $20 on some of their busiest days during the month of November and December.
"Holiday prices for airfare are almost always more expensive then the rest of the year," said travel consultant, Bette Prochaska with Woodlake Travel
Despite the fare hikes, Prochaska said there are plenty of destination deals to help defray the cost. Hotels and resorts have reduced prices and stay requirements to lure thrifty customers.
"This year, a lot of the resorts in the Caribbean, Mexico, ski resorts have reduced those requirements for minimum stays, or maybe they don't have minimum stay requirements at all," said Prochaska.
Other holiday hot spots this year include destinations with a Christmas theme.
"The prices are very, very good for going to Austria and Germany to see some of the typical holiday towns and villages," said Prochaska.
But for the best deal close to home, Mexico maybe your best bet.
"Mexico right now, you can stay at luxury resorts for prices you would not have seen in year's past for Christmas."
While it may cost more to fly, at least the stay will be a steal.
