For the past five years the Katy Freeway has been ripped up, traffic has been detoured, and road have been closed. Now the construction is over, and the Texas Department of Transportation says the average rush hour commute can be as much as fifteen minutes faster than it was during the construction phase.

Raquelle Lewis of TexDot says the completion of the Katy Freeway has also helped relieved traffic on the Westpark Tollway, which some commuters used as an alternative to riding the Katy while it was under construction. Peak commute times are down four minutes on the Westpark.

On I-290 "The Northwest Freeway" the morning rush hour commute has also improved by about five minutes, although it's so crowed and it's hard for commuters to notice the difference.

"I have noticed that we are driving a little bit faster but not up to speed," said Pat King.

TXDot admits it is not a dramatic change, but any relief is welcomed for I-290 commuters.

Well I'd like to at least go 55, and we are still at 40 or 45," King said.

The expansion of the Northwest Freeway is being planned, but so far there is no funding.

Still commuters dream of the day when they can drive 65.

"Come on I'm waiting for it," King said.
