The Houston Police Department says there are some simple things we can do around the house to make it harder to get inside.

Officer James Byrd from HPD said even if you have a deadbolt on your door, it's still possible for someone to pry the frame open and get in.

"The deadbolt should be a minimum of 1 inch long and this bolt should go down through the frame work completely," said Byrd.

The framework around the door also needs to be reinforced, to prevent someone from kicking it in.

Curb appeal is something you may not think of when it comes to safety. But HPD says it's one of the most important things you can do, like trimming the bushes back so it gives the robber nowhere to hide. Have your address clearly posted so police can find your house quickly, and put your home security sign up so people know that you have an alarm.

Officer Alvin Steelman from HPD also reminds us to put up lights around the house.

"These lights are motion activated. They also come on at night, the spotlight directs the light exactly where you need it. If someone's out here when they shouldn't be the light will come on," said Steelman.
