LA PORTE—
A small neighborhood in La Porte is outraged; residents say because recruiters for the Ku Klux Klan have been targeting them.Residents at the Fairmont Park Subdivision say KKK recruiters have been putting propaganda in their mailboxes in the form of a letter asking whites to join the group.
"I think it's trying to break down a community," said John Holland, a local resident. "I don't know who would be doing this, it leaves me speechless."
The letters apparently had been selectively hand-delivered without any postage to several homes. The Doughtys were among those left out, they say because they are black.
"They must know we live here," said Joseph Doughty. "I'm kind of scared because they may do something to us."
The letter states it's from a local recruiter for the KKK. It attempts to explain that the KKK is a Christian group that believes the Bible is about the white race, not the Jews, and that Christ was not a Jew. It also expresses fear that the white race will become extinct, and that race mixing is a violation of God's law. It says: "the future of our children and of our people depends solely on us." To join, you must be 100 percent white. It also urges people to act fast and join to "ensure the preservation, protection and advancement of the white race."
"Everyone who is out there doing this, I want to ask you all to stop," said Doughty. "We are human, just like you are human."
"Get a life, turn your life over to God," said Holland. "Not hating people, but loving people."
As an HOA board member, Holland is considering bringing the incident up to other HOA leaders to try and put a stop to the letters. The US Postal Service says it is illegal for anyone other than USPS to use the mailboxes because they are considered federal property.
"If there is something that can be done [it should be]," said Kimberly Strickland, another local resident. "Obviously they need to be prosecuted. Grow up, it's a new day and age, we don't need to be teaching our children that."
We tried to contact the local KKK recruitment office, but that proved difficult since the letter and the website do not list a phone number; just a P.O. BOX based out of Pasadena.
USPS also says it will be conducting an investigation.
