"What stands out about Shane, he always wanted to join the military. He always wanted to serve," said neighbor Laurence Liles.

On Thursday, Martin, 23, was killed in Afghanistan's Helmand Province after his vehicle hit a roadside bomb. The news of his death came as a blow to the Spring neighborhood where neighbors remembered him well.

"Shane was a happy-go-lucky person who had a love for his country. That's what he did, sign-up with the Marine Corps and basically protected our country and our freedom. He was fighting for that," said James Hott.

Martin moved to the U.S. from South Africa at age 12. He attended Klein Collins High School where he met and married his high school sweetheart. He earned his American citizenship while fighting in Iraq.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
