"To perform such an act that helps others is called a Mitzvah," said Rabie Roy Walter.

Hench the name "Mitzvah Day", an annual event that started 17 years ago.

The congregation partners up with various non-profit groups to deliver food to the elderly and under-privileged children and to give away clothes and other essentials to homeless shelters.

Cancer patients and heroes serving overseas were also on the list of grateful recipients to receive handmade blankets and caps.

"The cancer patients that we give these to, we have a card that we enclose telling that we made them with love and best wishes and hopes for their progressive recoveries," said Shirley Burkom, a volunteer. "I have received letters from soldiers in Afghanistan saying thank you for the caps, keep them coming."

Stitch by stitch, stroke by stroke, from each plant they planted, to each box of donations they packed, thousands of local residents will get to benefit from today's charity work.

"It feels great to have so many people involved because people really want to lend a helping hand," said Marcy Arnold, a volunteer.
