One Houston salon is keeping clipped hair for a good cause.
"Yeah, we generally throw it away," said Fantastic Sam's Manager, Peter Souse. "So, it's great to know that something we're doing can actually mean something that usually doesn't mean anything to us."
Souse and others are saving hair clippings to help make oil booms for the spill in the gulf.
"We basically have enough for one boom right now and this is after several, several heads of hair," he said.
The hair is going to a group called "Matter of Trust" that takes hair and nylon to make the homemade booms.
"Well, a lot goes a little way. It basically condenses and we've gotten a bag and a half so far," Souse said. "This is several services and several people dropping it off and we need more."
Employees say they're collecting hair from anywhere, all you have to do is come in and drop it off.
"This includes groomers, as well as extensions, human hair extensions, anything. Let's bring it in and let's get it to the gulf," Souse said.
Matter of Trust says it's getting hair from more than 370,000 salons in all 50 states, but it could always use more.
"So, as long as it takes, as long as we can keep helping, we're going to keep going," said Souse.
