HOUSTON -
Attorney John O'Quinn won $100 million dollars from Dow Corning after his clients had medical problems that were linked to the company's breast implants.
O'Quinn died in a car crash Thursday in Houston.
Plastic surgeon Dr. Franklin Rose was a friend of O'Quinn's, and he believes the flamboyant attorney is responsible for today's safer implants.
"It's been said by many that it was the tort litigation of the early 90s that really drove Dow Corning, and other implant manufacturers into bankruptcy. But it really spurred the development of a beautiful new implant," Rose said.
Stacy Tompkins had one of the early generation implants, and says she had no health problems. She still switched to the latest "fifth generation" implant just to be safe.
"That's the one thing that is beneficial, that every time I get sick I'm not afraid that my implants are leaking," said Tompkins.
"The first implants had a very thin shell, and the shell was very subject to rupture," said Tompkins.
O'Quinn will be remembered during a half time ceremony at the University of Houston football game at Robertson Stadium. The filed there is named after O'Quinn. People will lay flowers on the section of the field that has his name on it.
