An explosion was reported at a plant near Seabrook Wednesday morning. It happened at American Acryl, located in the 12100 block of Port Road near Highway 146 about 9 a.m.

Seabrook police say they received a report that a tank containing Toluene exploded. Investigators are trying to determine what caused the explosion. Seabrook Police, Harris County Precinct 8 Constable and the Texas Department of Public Safety responded to the incident and set up a perimeter around the building. Roads in the vicinity, including part of Highway 146, were closed. According to Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital, two people suffered minor burns, but are in good condition.

The City of Seabrook and the Clear Creek Independent School District issued a shelter in place, but that has since been lifted. People living in the area reported seeing a thick, black cloud of smoke visible for miles.

The American Acryl facility makes acrylic acid, which is a key component in several household products such as disposable diapers, hand lotion and water based paints. American Acryl is relatively new. It was built in 2002 at the Bayport Terminal. No previous accidents have been reported.
