Ohh, to be in love!! Those barefoot walks along the beach, those long stares into each other's eyes, but for some couples bliss becomes a bore. You can go from "I do" to "I need a lawyer." in a few years. A new survey suggests a prenuptial agreement is becoming an increasing part of the legal conversation.
The agreement, a document that clearly states who gets what assets after a divorce, was the main topic of a survey of nearly 2,300 single adults by Harris Interactive. Nearly one third of respondents said they would ask a significant other to sign a prenup.
Family attorney Jacque Taylor of Houston said she used to pull out prenup forms about twice a year, now it's happening about once or twice a month.
"I think when the economy starts to suffer, you see people trying to protect their assets more and more and in Texas we protect separate property," Taylor said. "Sometime people are too young and I tell them a prenup may not work for them."
Of course, you have to work for a living to pay for one of these things. Taylor said an attorney will charge between $5,000 to $10,000 for a valid agreement. You can also spend a few bucks online to download some of the basics.
Sometimes you can spend more than a few bucks on a wedding that never happens. Nadine Moon, owner of Who Made the Cake, on South Shepherd has stories about receptions that got canceled. No cake cutting because bride and groom couldn't cut a deal on the prenup.
Moon says one recent wedding was canceled at the last minute.
"We gave one cake to a shelter and guests ate another cake without the bride and groom, " Moon said.
