The U.S. Coast Guard is able to respond faster to boaters in distress thanks to a new rescue system and cell phone towers.

The Coast Guard receives mayday calls frequently when boaters need help. Coaster Guard officers say if boaters do not know their location, they could jeopardize the lives of everyone on board.

"There's not any road maps out there in the Gulf of Mexico, so when you say you were 30 miles off, you can't see any landmarks, you just see plenty of ocean," said Zach Edwards, U.S Coast Guard.

A new advanced system called Rescue 21 is helping the Coast Guard find and rescue boaters more efficiently.

"Essentially it takes the search out of search and rescue because what it does if you can get two lines of bearing in those two lines cross then that's pretty much where the person will be located," said Lamar Johnson, Commander, U.S Coast Guard.
