A Sealy childcare provider has been charged with endangering children. Owner Rita Patek was arrested Wednesday. Her husband Freddie was also arrested, and accused of obstructing the investigation. Texas Child Protective Services say the home at 227 Willow was licensed to care for three children and that "about 14 children" were being cared for according to spokeswoman Gwen Carter. Neighbors can't believe the charges.
"I see them playing outside. They go to the park and play. There is not that many kids as what they are saying," said Cristalynn Bell who lives next door and is also a distant relative of Patek.
There are media reports that kids were locked in a backyard shed. The building does have an air conditioner but it was unclear if it was operational at the time Police and CPS arrived. One man who went to the childcare back in the 1980s says he had a good experience.
"I kept track of friends who went there all the way up through high school. I mean everything was fine. Nobody was mistreated. Nobody was locked in a shed that I an ever remember," said John Baraks.
CPS could not confirm the ages of the children that are involved. Sealy Police refused to comment on Wednesday night. They are expected to comment on Thursday.
