HOUSTON—
When you heard the news about Tiger Woods and possible rehab for sex addiction, how did you react?"I think it was just an excuse, " said a jogger in Memorial Park.
She was not the only one who felt that way, but as people debate whether this is Tiger trouble or a Tiger tale, consider this: a national group dealing with sex addictions is based right here in Houston.
Sex Addicts Anonymous uses a 12-step program like Alcoholics Anonymous. Nearly 20,000 have signed up.
A group spokesman, who wants to remain anonymous, said "We do a public first step where you admit your issues in front of supportive people."
No word if Tiger Woods ever called, but Gatean Pauwels is qualified to make the right call when it comes to therapy. Pauwels was one of the first therapists in Houston to get certified in the subject. She's seen many patients with similar stories. Like the woman whose husband caught her in numerous affairs.
"For her it was the compulsion, the urge, not being able to stop the affairs," Pauwels said.
Pauwels treatment starts with abstinence for at least 30 days and then group therapy sessions.
"Group therapy lets you put all your cards out on the table and be honest in front of people with the same issues," Pauwels said.
