HOUSTON -
Suicide, homicide, or trick gone terribly wrong? Investigators have yet to determine why a local skateboarder plummeted to his death onto fast moving traffic off of the Hazard Street Bridge Saturday night.
"It's really sad, but I think he may have intended to commit suicide," local resident, Ruth Kurian, suspected. "Or it's just a really unfortunate accident."
The victim reportedly landed on the windshield of an 18-wheeler traveling on Interstate 59, before falling onto the road. He died at Ben Taub Hospital.
Police say it's still unclear how the victim ended on the freeway because tall fencing surrounds the bridge and the gates are locked.
While his identity is yet to be released pending an autopsy, local skaters we spoke to at a nearby street fair say they hope it's not someone they knew.
"It's very shocking to hear something like that happened," said Santana Serna. "Everybody in the skating community try to stick together, all respect goes out to him and his family."
Many of them suspect the victim may have been trying a difficult stunt.
"There are a lot of different extreme tricks that come along with skateboarding," said Serna. "Everyone tries to take it further and further. The more extreme you take it, the more respect you get from other people who can't do that."
Miles Wilson said he's already witnessed what he believes is a similar death.
"I've seen a guy try to do a handstand off a balcony at a party and off course he went over and died," said Wilson. "It was six stories."
Whatever the reason, local residents say something should be done to ensure to the safety of area skaters.
"I guess just have a skateboarding park because that would give them some place to do tricks," said Kurian.
