A Houston man is one of four soldiers killed in Afghanistan. Army Specialist Andrew J. Roughton was killed after a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle. The Department of Defense said Roughton and this fellow soldiers came under enemy fire with rocket propelled grenades and small arms.
The 21-year-old was a son, a husband, and brother. He leaves behind a family of friends who say his smile and positive outlook they're all going to miss.
"He has the best smile, big and goofy and no matter what happened he was always a positive guy. He never liked being in a bad mood," said Meaghan Freeman.
Freeman's younger brother, Jonathan Freeman, was Roughton's best friend. The two met their freshman year at Spring Woods High School in Spring Branch. Shortly after graduating, Roughton joined the Army.
"He was enjoying it right now, the traveling, the friends, and just being in the Army. It's the proudest thing he's done for himself. He was very proud of that," said Freeman.
Freeman said she broke the news to her brother who is currently stationed overseas in Japan at the Okinawa Marine Corp base.
"He's taking it pretty hard," she said.
Freeman said her brother is not on leave until September, but will try to come home in time for his best friend's funeral service.
Meanwhile, a memorial page was setup on Facebook for friends and family to express their grief and love for the man they will miss.
"He hasn't been home since last summer that's when everybody last saw him."
Roughton was stationed at Ft. Drum in upstate New York. At this time no funeral arrangements have been announced.
