HOUSTON -
The Houston Public Works Department has 200 active water main breaks across the city. That is about four times more than normal. It's causing some people to experience low water pressure at their homes.
"If a particular neighborhood is experiencing water pressure issues we encourage them to contact the city's 311 service help line," said Roberto Medina of the Public Works and Engineering Department.
The water pressure problems are not being caused by a water shortage, but it is being caused indirectly by a lack of rain.
"The combination of no water and high temperatures causes the ground to become dry and potentially shift. When there is shifting of the ground that causes water lines to move break," said Medina.
The good news is the city says there is plenty of water at the city's sources, Lake Livingston and Lake Conroe. That means residents can keep watering their lawn.
"We've got a system that is capable of 720 million gallons per day. As of yesterday we produced 536 million gallons per day," said Medina.
The water main repairs continue at a pace of about 50 per day in Houston.
"We ask the public to be patient," Medina said.
Some cell phones don't support the City of Houston's 3-1-1 Help Line. Those who can't get through by dialing 3-1-1 should dial 713-837-0311 and reach the same operators.
