HOUSTON - The City of Houston is calling in reinforcements in it's battle to fix an unusually large amount of water main breaks.

The water main breaks are caused by dry ground that is shifting and breaking water pipes. The dry ground is caused by a lack of rain in Southeast Texas. Many areas have seen little to no rain in the past 30 days.

People who live near a water main break will experience low water pressure.

There are about 200 water main breaks across the city. Without the additional help from private contractors Houston can repair about 50 breaks per day.

Fortunately there is not a shortage of water in Houston. City leaders are not requiring water conservation, but as always they are recommending that people water their lawns after the sun goes down.

"As a public notice we like to ask the citizens to consider watering their yards between 8 P.M. and midnight, or during the early morning hours for effective water use," said Roberto Mendina of the Houston Public Works and Engineering Department.

Medina says watering your lawn during the cool parts of the day is more effective because the water does not evaporate as easily as when the sun is beating down on your lawn.

If you need to report a water main break call the Houston Help Line by dialing 3-1-1.

Some people will find that their cell phone won't connect to the 3-1-1 help line. Those people should call 713-837-0311.
