An investigation is underway involving Jack Yates High School principal, Ronald Mumphery.
According to Houston ISD officials, Mumphrey is still working - just not at Yates. The district remained quiet Wednesday about the investigation, saying it is a personnel matter.
From the outside, it seemed to be an ordinary day Wednesday at Yates High School with students and parents coming and going from the building.
"Nothing is happening inside the building. It's [a] quiet, normal day," said Paula Labove, whose daughter attends Yates.
But inside, someone was missing: Mumphery.
A spokesman for HISD said Mumphery was notified Tuesday afternoon about the investigation regarding allegations of professional misconduct. The investigation has nothing to do with recent fights between students and HISD police, officials said.
Mumphery has been assigned to a location away from the school until the investigation is complete. An interim principal took over his duties.
"I really was surprised about it," Labove said, adding that Mumphery and the Yates staff have gone the extra mile for her 17-year-old daughter. "She was having problems in school and he helped her and talked to me about it."
She said they are helping to keep her daughter on the right path to graduation.
"She comes out here last year from real far and I kept her at Yates [because] Mr. Mumphery helped me with that. He's not a bad principal. He tries to do what is right for the students; him, the counselors and the office," Labove said.
Yates has been under Mumphery's leadership since 2008. Under his watch, the school's basketball team took home the state championship title and the Lyons were ranked number one in the nation.
"He is a good principal because he did change the school a lot," Labove said.
We went to Mumphery's home, but no one answered. We also contacted the school but no one responded to our requests for an interview.
