I am a man of extremes...it's either all the way in one direction or the other. I really don't get the middle ground; I feel it's a place that lacks passion.
I'm telling you this because I’ve mentioned in the past how much I enjoy driving fast! Well, at the moment my pendulum has swung in the other direction and I’m in a slow driving phase and really enjoying it! No I didn't get another ticket. I'm consumed with pushing the gas mileage limits of my car! If nothing else this game I’m playing with myself is fun for me and I feel like I am saving a few pennies on fuel. The 2011 VW I own is supposed to get 33 mpg on the highway and currently I’m getting 35 point one, all because I’m grandma-ing it. As soon as I get rollin I shift into second gear and my car will drive in top gear at speeds as slow as 35mph so I try to get to 6th as soon as I can. If you're not geekin out with me yet, maybe this will speak to you. I have noticed another side benefit to my slow driving (not geriatric by the way, I’m not a hazard on the road.
When I arrive at my destination, I find that I’m not all tense and on edge. It’s less stress all around. My friend Mike Barbagallo, one of our NewsFix predators used the term "Zen" in describing the driving experience. Becoming one with the car. Working with it and not beating on it. Interesting!
So, my car holds 14.5 gallons of high octane gas and as we speak, I’m trying to squeeze 520 miles out of this tank. That’s 35.9 miles per gallon or as I like to call it...my new record!
