So that’s it. It’s a new week and Joe Paterno is dead and buried. I'll probably take some heat for this, but I think the way Joe Paterno was vilified, as if he himself had committed child molestation and to be made a scapegoat by the university by abruptly remove Paterno from his head coaching job at Penn State by phone, after more than 50 years of service, is shameful.
Paterno may have been guilty of an error in judgment by not staying more closely involved in the Sandusky alleged child sex investigation, but I believe Paterno's telling the university administration personnel what he knew about alleged inappropriate behavior by Sandusky and then staying out of it is more a function of Paterno being an 80-year-old man and less about him willingly participating in an orchestrated cover-up!
Joe Paterno was what people I grew up with call an old school Italian who by the way should have retired years ago! I'll bet, Paterno thought the accusations involving Sandusky would be investigated and handled, he just wanted to coach football. Child sex wasn't on his radar; he didn't want to know about his assistant Coach's alleged perversion! Which could be why if the allegations against Sandusky are proven true, it was able to go on for as long as it did!
What allegedly occurred to all those young boys is abominable, but I’m sticking up for Joe Paterno because I feel that after a lifetime of giving so much of himself to help others, to throw his still warm body and his reputation into the dumpster just for being associated with Sandusky is an unnecessary slandering of a now dead man's legacy!
