The U.S. Postal Service announced Monday they plan on closing 250 or more mail processing centers and slow first class mail service next spring virtually eliminating next day letter delivery. Unfortunately, this will eliminate nearly 30,000 jobs nationwide. It’s not just e-mail killing the mailman, it’s the $5.5-billion the USPS is responsible for giving the treasury annually for retiree health benefits. That problem would have contributed to killing general motors if it wasn't for a government bailout.
I feel bad, but not sorry and hope they don't get bailed out. The postal service isn't the first industry to experience obsolescence and it hasn't been great for years! It irritated me, even 15 years ago when you go the post office and wait on line to mail a package and watch the people behind the counter move as if drugged on sleeping pills, with zero sense of urgency to the growing line of customers! I wonder if it was that laziness which stifled the growth necessary to compete in a world of fed ex and e-mail? Excellent customer service matters big time in today’s world.
About a month ago, my mother put two separate letters in the mail at the exact same time, one for each of my daughters from California. One got here in 6 days, the other in 14! How does that happen unless there's no care or control guaranteeing prompt delivery or incompetence! And they continue to raise stamp prices while talking about reducing delivery days!
As my high school wrestling coach used to say when someone was about to get pinned and lose the match…Mom, start the car, it’s time to go!
