You could probably say Veronica Vernon was reborn on May 2, 2011.
She's a U.S. veteran who served our country, but after leaving the military in 1989 at only 23-years-old, Veronica says she lost herself.
“I was deep underneath the lowest of the low in my addiction and I had nowhere to go,” said Vernon. “Marijuana, alcohol and homeless. I started using drugs when my daughter was 2-years-old and it went from there, escalated and rolled down hill.”
Roaming the streets for nearly 2 decades and resorting to drugs, Veronica tried treatment 6 times.
“None of them were successful until I came here,” said Vernon.
The Santa Maria Hostel is now her home.
Its Houston’s first transitional housing program geared toward female veterans. Helping to empower women and breaking their addictions.
“I feel wonderful, I feel clean and sober just because I’m crying doesn’t mean I’m sad, I’m happy,” said Vernon.
Veronica, now 45, is hoping to go back to school and get an engineering degree.
“It’s never too late to learn it’s never too late to be happy and enjoy life.” said Vernon. “It was a blessing a blessing from god.”
Veronica is not only doing it for herself, but for her 5 children.
