  13. This Conscience Thing

Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi is at odds with the Catholic Church because the US catholic bishops have said they wouldn't approve if the Obama administration forced insurance companies to cover abortion costs. Pelosi said, "I’m a devout catholic and I honor my faith and love it, but they have this conscience thing (that puts women at risk).” Insurance providers forced to pay abortion costs is classified as a "conscience issue" because the catholic church feels it would put some people at insurance companies at odds with their faith, as the catholic church is against birth control and abortion. I'm not here to debate life and abortion, but I do wrestle with the Catholic Church’s’ views on certain things as I too am a catholic. Even down to changing the prayers at mass recently that has been the same as long as I’ve been alive!  The whole mass is different…I think it’s ridiculous!  I wouldn't want to have to fight Pelosi’s political battle but for me…I've rationalized it much like alcoholics anonymous. Take what you need and leave the rest. The Catholic Church is not "God"!  Its run by man not the deity, and like man, the church has shown itself to be less than perfect dealing with its own problems, like priests and pedophilia. I do my best to live right and the god i believe in is a loving, "forgiving" god who would never condemn one of his flock for taking a birth control pill or having to make the gut wrenching decision to end a life in the most difficult of circumstances. And if he's not those things, then it’s pointless trying to walk his walk and keep a god known as "love" at the forefront of your conscience.
